ARTIST-ACTIVIST PLASTIC JESUS PUTS ‘BULLETPROOF DESK’ IN WEHO TARGET AS A COMMENTARY ON GUN VIOLENCE

ARTIST-ACTIVIST PLASTIC JESUS PUTS ‘BULLETPROOF DESK’ IN WEHO TARGET AS A COMMENTARY ON GUN VIOLENCE

You might call “Plastic Jesus” a guerrilla artist — his style is often unconventional and unauthorized. Some of his work has shock value, a form of commentary on social and political issues.

His latest target? Gun violence, as well as the retail chain Target.

At the West Hollywood Target on Thursday, the artist and activist, who is named Nick and who hails from London, put on display a child’s bulletproof desk, which was for sale for nearly $200.

Featuring “bulletproof panels” around the leg area, which create a “safe space” for a child to take cover during a mass shooting, the art piece drew interest from shoppers. One boy jumped right onto the chair.

A sign read “No more need for thoughts and prayers, don’t let your child be the next victim and only available in the USA,” though there were some gasps among those who read the line “Money back if your child gets shot.”

Target wasn’t involved, but Plastic Jesus said he wanted to send a bold message about gun violence and reform following the recent string of mass shootings, so he and his team dressed up as Target employees and set up the desk in the children’s furniture section.

“With multiple school shootings, we keep skitting around the real subject, coming up with door locks and arming teachers, everything but the real issue, which is reducing access to guns,” he said.

You’ve probably seen this artist’s work before; he was behind the “wall” surrounding Donald Trump’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

“I did a similar project here in Target a while back with child bulletproof vests in the back-to-school section,” he said. “And I just think it’s quite horrifying that people believe these things are real.”

The display was in Target for at least half an hour before Plastic Jesus and his team left the store.

It was gone when KTLA went there Thursday evening, and store management had no comment.

THREE DEAD, INCLUDING SUSPECT IN ST. LOUIS HIGH SCHOOL SHOOTING

A 19-year-old gunman opened fire at a high school in St. Louis, Missouri, on Monday, killing two people and injuring seven others before officers fatally shot the suspect, the city’s police commissioner said.

No motive for the gun violence was immediately apparent, but Police Commissioner Mike Sack told an early evening news conference the assailant may have suffered from mental illness.

Students fleeing from the Central Visual and Performing Arts High School as police arrived on the scene told officers the shooter was armed with a rifle, Sack said.

Police exchanged gunfire with the suspect after storming the school, and he was shot dead, ending the rampage about 15 minutes after the first calls for help came in at about 9:10 a.m., the commissioner said.

The suspect was identified as Orlando Harris, 19, who graduated from high school last year and had no previous criminal history, Sack told reporters.

“There are suspicions that there may have been some mental illness that he was experiencing. We’re working on developing that information right now,” he said.

A 61-year-old teacher and a 16-year-old girl were killed, Sack said. Four other teenagers suffered gunshot wounds and three more youths sustained other injuries in the pandemonium.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch newspaper, citing relatives, identified the teacher as Jean Kuczka, who taught health and physical education.

“While on paper we might have nine victims … we have hundreds of others,” Sack said. “Everyone who survived this is going to take home trauma.”

The bloodshed marked a rash of U.S. school shootings that have left dozens dead and wounded this year alone. One of the deadliest took place in May when a gunman killed 19 children and two adults in Uvalde, Texas.

Sack declined to say how the suspect in Monday’s shooting gained entry to the school, attended by about 380 students, though he said doors to the building had been locked, slowing down his ability to get inside.

The high school had seven security officers on site and metal detectors, a school official told the news conference. The security officers were not armed, according to Sack.

A math teacher, David Williams, told the Post-Dispatch that the school principal alerted staff and students over the public address system with the code phrase for a school shooter. He described hearing multiple shots outside his classroom, adding that a window in his classroom door was shot out.

In the Uvalde rampage in May, police and other law enforcement officers were castigated for waiting more than an hour before confronting the shooter, who was locked inside a pair of adjoining classrooms with students and teachers. The suspect in that case entered the school building through an unlocked door.

BROOKLYN CLERGYMAN ROBBED AT GUNPOINT WHILE LIVE-STREAMING SUNDAY SERMON

A bishop who was in the middle of delivering his sermon and his wife were robbed at gunpoint of more than $1 million worth of jewelry at a Brooklyn church on Sunday, the police said. The heist was caught on a livestream video of the service.

Lamor M. Whitehead, 44, a bishop at the Leaders of Tomorrow International Ministries in the southeastern Brooklyn neighborhood of Canarsie, spoke about the armed robbery in an Instagram post, calling it an example of “how the devil moves.”

“The devil don’t care; he sent them,” Mr. Whitehead said. He did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Just before the robbery began, footage of the sermon posted on YouTube showed Mr. Whitehead posing a question to his congregation: “How many of you have lost your faith because you saw somebody else die?” Almost immediately after, a trio of armed and masked individuals in black clothing entered the church, according to Mr. Whitehead, the police and the footage.

Seconds after his question, Mr. Whitehead appeared to spot the intruders as they entered the church and he laid down on the raised stage while raising his arms. “I didn’t know if they wanted to shoot the church up, or if they were just coming for a robbery,” he said in the Instagram post. Shrieks could be heard from the parishioners. It was unclear how many people were in attendance.

He described lying on the ground with a gun pointed at him and subsequently being stripped of belongings, including his watch, multiple chains, wedding band and bishop’s cross. He said the assailants wrenched off his clergy collar to reach his necklaces. Mr. Whitehead said he believed the intruders did not know that they were being filmed.

Jewelry was also taken from Mr. Whitehead’s 38-year-old wife, the police said, adding that neither of the victims was injured. After the theft, which took place shortly after 11 a.m., the three individuals fled on foot and entered a white Mercedes-Benz vehicle. They were last seen driving away, the police said, and no arrests had been made. An investigation was ongoing, the New York Police Department said.

In the Instagram post on Sunday, Mr. Whitehead addressed the thieves and asked them to turn themselves in. He told them that their actions had traumatized parishioners including young children, who he said were still crying. He said a gun had been in his 8-month-old daughter’s face.

“You did this to the church, the church where I’m sure your grandmother praises God and Jesus,” he said. “There’s no reason for you to come inside a church and violate it.”

Mr. Whitehead also responded to criticism calling him “flashy” for his accessories and his luxury car.

“It’s about me purchasing what I want to purchase,” Mr. Whitehead said. “It’s my prerogative to purchase what I want to purchase if I worked hard for it.”

He also expressed gratitude to God that his church had avoided a mass shooting, a fatal scenario that he noted other congregations had experienced. He promised he would be back on the pulpit to preach this Sunday.

Mr. Whitehead said in a Facebook livestream on Monday that he was offering a $50,000 cash reward for information leading to the arrest of the armed robbers.

2 KILLED, 5 INJURED IN SHOOTING AT CROWDED SAN PEDRO PARK, SUSPECT STILL AT LARGE

Police were searching for suspects aftet two people were killed and five wounded in a shooting Sunday afternoon at a crowded San Pedro oark

Police said there were approximately 500 people at Peck Park just before 4 p.m., when they received reports of a shooting. A softball game was underway and a car show had drawn crowds, but it was not immediately clear if either event was connected to the shooting.

Initial reports indicated that the shooting took place at the park’s baseball diamond, according to officials.

“We don’t know how many shooters we have at this point,” Los Angeles Police Department Capt. Kelly Muniz said.

Muniz said the shooting was a dispute between two parties. Weapons were recovered at the scene, police said. As of 7 p.m., police did not have anyone in custody and had no description of suspects.

Seven people suffered gunshot wounds and were taken to hospitals, including a man and a woman who died, according to Los Angeles Fire Department spokesperson Brian Humphrey.

Lola Warrant said she was watching a softball game when the shooting began. She said she ran and fell and saw people struck by gunfire, including a woman who was bleeding from the elbow and a man shot in the calf.

“They were carrying him,” Warrant said in an interview outside the park. “I get up to my car, and the guy’s laid out in front of my car.

“Somebody threw something on his face, and the police officers came, they took it off of his face, check his vitals and start pumping his chest,” she said.

Warrant said she was stranded at the scene because her car was parked near the site where someone died.

“It’s sad and heartbreaking that people still won’t talk,” said Skipp Townsend, a gang interventionist who visits the park regularly, standing outside the police tape with other onlookers. “You know, instead they pick up guns. So that’s heartbreaking, that we can have peaceful events in this area for, you know, two, three years straight with no incidents, and then one incident like this happens.”

The LAPD declared a citywide tactical alert because of the large number of officers sent to the scene. LAPD Officer Luis Garcia said the park had been closed, and police had directed people to head back to their vehicles and clear the area.

Around 8 p.m., people were still making their way out of the park

3 KILLED BY ACTIVE SHOOTER AT INDIANA MALL BEFORE BYSTANDER SHOOTS HIM DEAD

Authorities revealed new details Monday on the weekend mall shooting in Greenwood, Indiana, including the identities of the gunman, three victims and the legally armed bystander who fatally shot the gunman.

The shooting rampage took place at the Greenwood Park Mall around 6 p.m. Sunday. Multiple people called 911 to report an active shooter. Three people died and two were injured as a result of the shooting. Greenwood is 15 miles south of Indianapolis.

The gunman was identified as Jonathan Douglas Sapirman, 20, who police said prepared for the shooting for a little over an hour in a bathroom before he emerged with a rifle, Greenwood Police Chief James Ison said.

The victims were identified as Indianapolis couple Pedro Pineda, 56, and Rosa Mirian Rivera de Pineda, 37, and Victor Gomez, 30, who is also from Indianapolis.

The legally armed bystander who ended up shooting the gunman was identified as Elisjsha Dicken, 22, of Seymour, Indiana. Dicken was able to neutralize the gunman within two minutes after the gunman had already fired 24 rounds from his rifle. Dicken fired 10 shots from his Glock handgun.

“He engaged the gunman from quite a distance with a handgun — was very proficient in that, very tactically sound and as he moved to close in on the suspect he was also motioning for people to exit behind him,” Ison said. “Many more people would have died last night if not for a responsible armed citizen that took action very quickly within the first two minutes of the shooting.”

Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb tweeted Monday that the state is grateful for the “quick, heroic actions taken by an individual citizen and first responders on Sunday evening in Greenwood, surely preventing further loss of life and injuries.”

“I stand with the community in grieving the loss of lives, and my thoughts are also with the many people impacted by this traumatic incident, including innocent bystanders whose lives are forever changed,” Holcomb tweeted.

There have been more than 350 mass shootings this year, according to Gun Violence Archive. Like CNN, the archive defines a mass shooting as one in which four or more people are shot, not including the shooter.

Greenwood now joins a slew of others also grappling with the aftermath of mass shootings, including communities reeling from recent massacres at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, and a July Fourth parade in Highland Park, Illinois.

Police are still investigating the shooter’s motive and questioning people who were inside the mall at the time. Police are asking all witnesses to contact authorities.Multiple agencies responded to the scene to assist, including the FBI, ATF, Johnson County Sheriff’s Department and Department of Homeland Security, Ison said.

“This tragedy hits at the core of our community,” Greenwood Mayor Mark Meyers said in a Facebook post Sunday. “Please offer your prayers to the victims and our first responders.”

The suspect had several minor juvenile offenses, like a fight at school and that he was a juvenile runaway, but no adult record, Ison said.

Sapirman’s family told police that he had recently resigned from a position he held at a warehouse in May, Ison said.

A SWAT team clearing Sapirman’s apartment found a laptop and a can of butane in a “high temperature” oven, Ison said Monday. The laptop was damaged.

“I don’t want to speculate what his intentions were, whether it could have been to cause a fire or to damage the laptop, but we did retrieve the laptop and that is going to go to Quantico to be analyzed,” Ison said.

Herbert Stapleton, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Indianapolis Field Office, said investigators need to consult with technical experts to see what’s possible.

The FBI will also be analyzing the suspect’s cell phone, which was found in a toilet in the bathroom near the mall’s food court, officials announced Monday.

“We’re working as fast as we can to try to get the phone to a point where it can be exploited, there’s no guarantee that we’ll be able to recover any data, we’re just working as fast as we can to try to get that done,” Stapleton said Monday.
